Juan Manuel Lopez vs Wilfredo Vazquez Jr
BY KID HERSH
From Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan Puerto Rico came a bad blood matchup between Juan Manuel Lopez (34-5, 31KO's) vs Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (24-6-1, 19KO's). The action was surprisingly slow in the first round. JuanMa boxed off the back foot, looking for openings, while Vazquez was pressing the action and trying to get his punches off first. JuanMa landed the best shots; straight left hands that thudded home from his heavy hands. JuanMa started to come forward and press the action but Vazquez was getting the better of it, landing lead left hooks to JuanMa as he left his right guard low. Vazquez was also picking his spots with lead right hands that were landing as JuanMa came forward. The action really started to heat up in the fifth round when JuanMa was landing some flush power shots and Vazquez looked like he was not taking them too well due to wobbly legs. The sixth round started slow but then was a slugfest by the end of it, with both fighters seeming to be hurt from taking the others shots. The slugfest ensued into the seventh round, with Vazquez having success in pushing JuanMa backwards to start the round but then eventually tiring and JuanMa pressing the action for the remainder of the round. JuanMa was reeling around the ring in the eighth round but this is not territory he has not been plenty of times before as he dug deep and put himself together for more power punching. He landed a left hand on Vazquez two minutes into the eighth that made him react, wincing in pain. To start the ninth round Vazquez still had a look of pure pain on his face. Both fighters seemed to catch a second wind and right when it looked like the fight was going the distance Vazquez had the look of pure pain on his face again in the eleventh round. JuanMa pressed him and by the end of the round Vazquez was leaving his guard wide open for bombs and JuanMa caught him with a left hook that sent him back into the ropes which is where the fight was called off by the referee. Pandemonium then ensued shortly after when JuanMa got into a fight with Vazquez's trainer. See pic below for the craziness. It did not take too long for the two to make up, however, as they were hugging just minutes later in what seemed to be an embrace of misunderstanding.
