Antonio Margarito vs Jorge Paez Jr.
BY KID HERSH
BeIN card from Arena de Cuidad, Mexico that was featuring Antonio Margarito's (38-8, 27ko's) comeback fight vs Jorge Paez Jr. (39-7-2, 23ko's). In the first round Margarito looked very trigger shy and rusty from being out of the ring. This carried through the second round but he did start to warm up near the end of it. The third round turned into more of a war with back and forth action and Margarito having success backing Paez up into the ropes and unloading his long but powerful inside shots that he is known for. It turned into more of a Margarito looking fight in the fourth round as the action was all on the inside and Margo was getting the better of it as he warmed up and got the style and type of fight that would favor him, seemingly no matter who is in the ring with him. The continued until in the sixth round, right when I thought Paex was about to go down Margarito got dropped two minutes into the round from a body shot that hurt him and then head shots that toppled him over. He rose, still hurt, but battled back (almost on empty and ready to go) as Margo knows how to do so well to make it through the round. That was pretty exciting considering I had Margarito winning every round since the second or third and gaining the advantage more and more as he went. Like classic Margarito where his engine was just ramping up more and more while the other man wilting - as evidenced by the marks on Paez's face. Going down the stretch for the remainder of the fight Margarito recouped rather well, as expected, but still had trouble until his engine warmed up again (ever the slow burner). In the ninth and tenth rounds the fight was still up in the air but Margarito came through with his never ending stamina and relentless will to pull out the two final rounds and seal the UD on the fight, while also getting Paez into trouble and nearly taking him out.
