Terence Crawford vs Dierry Jean
BY KID HERSH
From Omaha Nebraska came HBO Boxing After Dark. First up was a replay of last weekends PPV event at MSG featuring Chocolatito and GGG. Then it was straight to the main event with Terence Crawford (26-0, 18ko's) vs Dierry Jean (29-1, 20ko's). Jean is really only known for his decision loss to LaMont Peterson last year and this is his first fight at 140lbs as Top Rank is showing that they are going to ease Crawford into the division with another opponent that doesn't figure to offer a lot of resistance at the weight with Jean a heavy 12/1 underdog, and his last opponent Dulorme was something around 10/1. In the first round it was a feeler for both men until in the waning seconds Crawford switched to southpaw and caught Jean with a right hook to the chin that dropped Jean. He made it through the round as there were only seconds left but this was a shocker that no one saw coming after this tame, chess match of a round. Crawford stayed in southpaw for the whole second round and not much was happening other than Jean was having trouble getting off and couldn't find a rhythm but then suddenly at the end of the round Crawford landed a right hook that hurt and nearly dropped Jean again. The third round was mostly Crawford keeping Jean on the outside and controlling his man, which continued through the next couple rounds with Crawford getting extremely aggressive in the fifth round in tracking his man down, cutting off the ring, and looking to land a knockout shot. He is very patient in doing so, not throwing at a high output but he is just extremely deadly accurate when he does let his hands fly because he has already set something up at that point. Jean has had a look like he doesn't want to be in the ring since the fourth round - he looks like a beaten man! He continued outboxing Jean in the coming rounds, with Jean getting a second wind but still not landing anything of note or being able to get into a rhythm at all. In the eighth round we saw the best action of the fight in the final minute of the round when Jean landed two overhand rights that were extremely powerful, with one of them buzzing Crawford. This prompted him to fight back and start shit talking to Jean while pissing him off. The action was stopped by referee Weeks when he accidentally thought the ten second bell was the final bell, causing the crowd to boo heavily as the best action of the fight was interrupted. In the ninth round Crawford came out looking for blood and pursued his man until he finally sent him to the canvas at the end of the round. Crawford pursued the game Jean right away at the start of the tenth round and ended up getting the stoppage midway through the round when he put Jean down with a left hook when backing him up to the ropes. The referee stopped the fight and Crawford had his sensational win that he needed to secure a Pacquiao fight in April. After the fight while talking to Kellerman he revealed that it was personal with Jean and that he wasn't changing his viewpoint of the fighter or disregarding what he said before the fight. Crawford has a mean streak!
