By Kid Hersh
José “Chon” Zepeda (28-1, 23KO’s) vs Carlos “Chuko” Díaz Ramirez (26-0, 13KO’s) for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Lightweight Title Eliminator bout.
The bout took take place at the Auditorio del Estado in Mexicali, Baja California, and was broadcast on beIN Sports in the US and Casa del Boxeo, Azteca 7 in the region.
In the first round, both men took each other's best punches. Diaz came forward at the start of the round, but it was Zepeda who was pressing Chuko backwards by the end of the first round and punishing him with power shots as he looked like the stronger man. In the second round, you could see that Chon was doing a good job of making Chuko fight when he did not want to and then not allowing a fight when Chuko would press forward trying to get one. In the third round, Chuko was making a war of the fight as he pressed forward and put more heavy pressure on Zepeda. The pressure mounted in the fourth round when Chuko put in amazing bodywork and had Zepeda hurt to the body and back peddling. He scored a knockdown from all of the bodywork but Zepeda did make it through the round but he still looked like he was in a weakened state in the fifth round. Chuko was going for the kill when he got caught with body and headshots. Zepeda dug deep, pressed the advantage, and scored a knockout as Chuko was counted out while puking. Wow, what a great fight!
